Gender Ratio in India

The Gender ratio refers to the number of females per 1,000 males, providing crucial insights into gender balance in a population. According to the 2011 Census, India’s gender ratio was 940 females per 1,000 males, showing an improvement from the 933 females reported in the 2001 Census. This rise in the gender ratio marks progress after decades of decline.

For the past five decades, the gender ratio hovered around 930 females per 1,000 males, highlighting persistent gender disparities due to societal norms. However, the slight increase in the gender ratio in recent years points toward gradual change. The gender ratio is a valuable indicator for assessing women’s population relative to men, and addressing imbalances is essential for achieving gender equality.
